Documentary dance performance ‘Why?’ at 1933 Micro Theater

"The art of sound and the art of performance both occupy an untouchable space. Existing momentarily in front of an audience, disappearing without a trace. They are things that you cannot hold onto, that you cannot have, that you can just experience for one fleeting moment. The performance consists of four members of SLATE drawing inspiration from sound emissions, the performers listen, react, interpret, leave you with something. They provide another ephemeral layer to the act of listening.
A STATE OF TRANSPARENCY / BREATH / SILENCE / PERMEABLE / PHYSICAL SENSATION / PERCEPTION
Three performers move within the exhibition hall, standing out from the darkness, guided by the sounds of the atmosphere and audience. They are darkness and light, what cannot be touched. Listen. They manifest the sound waves, resonance, vibrations. They create a tangible world in response to what only can be perceived."
'Why?' : documentary performance
"An audio/visual examination of the lives of four performers. We see the dancer on stage, but don't often hear their story
Why fight to join a profession that doesn't want you? Why break your own bones in the process? Why continue when you are 'too old', 'not good enough', 'don't have the right body'? Why do you dance?
Set to a score of personal audio interviews, in a live documentary performance, four performers attempt to answer these questions and share their personal stories of how they got to this point.
The personal motivations of each dancer isexplored with the simple introductory question 'Why do you dance?'. Supplemental questions will dig deeper into their lives as dancers and personal philosophies, sacrifices and intentions."
